The least popular baby names of 2017 have been revealed

The least popular baby names of 2017 have been revealed – with research showing traditional monikers like Gail and Roger are on the way out.

According to website Baby Centre, a total of 24 baby names have made it on to their ‘endangered list’ – 14 girls’ names and 10 boys’ names.

Topping the least popular list for girls were the names Anita, Bertha and Bonnie, while unpopular monikers for the boys included Bertram, Clarence and Clive.

Although the beautiful Cindy Crawford has the name Cindy, it has lost popularity in the recent years

And whilst Cindy is of course most famously associated with glamorous supermodel Cindy Crawford, even her name made it to fifth spot on the unpopular list.

The name, which means ‘light’, made a statement in 1965 where out of nowhere it made its mark in the top 100 baby names of the time.

Anita as a name has plummeted in popularity since first becoming popular in 1963.

It seems that old fashioned names are on the way out, at least according to the baby name trends of 2017, with the two least popular names being Anita and Bertram

Back then, 88 baby girls in Australia alone were given the name which means ‘full of grace’, ‘mercy’, ‘favour’, ‘variety’ and ‘a leader’.

Anita’s popularity varied from 1976 to 1983 but completely dropped off after that year and has not reappeared in popularity lists since then.

Although an interesting name, Bertram, which means ‘bright raven’ in German, never seems to have captured the imagination of a majority of parents.

According to Nameberry, the Norman name last found favour in the 1930s and despite its appearance as a Hogwarts student in Harry Potter has failed to find popularity.

According to NSW Government's Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages , Anita was the 99th most popular baby name in New South Wales in 1963

Frank came in at number six on the unpopular list – a fall from grace compared to the period between the 1880s and 1920s when it was in the top 10, according to Nameberry.

‘Frank has fallen from favor but still has a certain warm, friendly real-guy grandpa flavor that could come back into style, like other such choices as Jake and Jack. Maybe thanks to Sinatra, it’s become a new hipster favorite,’ the site states.

Cynthia and Ian also appear on the unpopular list – despite having a celebrity association from the likes of Sex in the City’s Cynthia Nixon and award-winning actor Sir Ian McKellen.
