The luckiest postcodes for lotto prize money – ahead of Powerball’s record $110million draw

Australia’s luckiest postcodes when it comes to winning the biggest lottery prizes are all near the beach.

Thursday night’s $110million Powerball division one jackpot will set new a record if won by one person, making it the more generous prize since Australia’s first lottery draw in 1881.

To date, Australia’s lottery record was set in January this year when an inner-Sydney woman won $107million from an online Powerball entry.

That prize, won by a healthcare worker in her forties, dwarfed the previous $70million record set in January 2016 when grandparents from Hervey Bay, in the 4655 postcode north of Brisbane, won the Powerball jackpot.

Two years earlier, in December 2013, a group of women from Runaway Bay on the Gold Coast won $70million from OzLotto after buying tickets with their left-over lunch money in the 4216 postcode area.

Proving the Gold Coast is indeed a lucky area, a $60million Powerball prize was won by a retiree from Burleigh Heads, postcode 4220.

The lucky suburbs south of Brisbane are only 25km apart and four postcodes apart.

Last year, a mystery Melbourne Powerball player, from Brunswick in the city’s inner-north, postcode 3056, won $55million from a January ticket – but didn’t claim the prize until July.

Some suburbs are also luckier when it comes to more modest division one lottery prizes during the past year.
