A secluded beach with breath-taking surroundings and pristine turquoise water has been crowned the best in the country by Tourism Australia for 2022 from a list of 11,000.
Misery Beach is 20km south of Albany on Western Australia’s south coast – about five hours away from Perth.
Despite the name, the beach is a small piece of paradise with 200 metres of white sand and fantastic snorkelling spots.
The comprehensive list of the nation’s best beaches was announced on Sunday morning by Tourism Minister Dan Tehan and the list was compiled by Tourism Australia’s beach ambassador Brad Farmer.

The white beach and surrounding granite backdrop would make for the ultimate summer picnic spot
‘With more than 11,000 beaches to choose from, narrowing down the top 20 beaches must be one of the toughest jobs in Australia,’ Mr Tehan told news.com.au.
‘As Australia continues its successful reopening, we’re going to see a surge in tourists that will support jobs and businesses.
‘My message to the world is to start planning your next holiday to Australia and to include as many of our top 20 beaches on your itinerary as you can fit in.’
But the name has a gruesome past as the picturesque beach was steeped with blood 44 years ago from a nearby whaling station
The whaling station ceased in 1978 and the beach is now a safe haven for marine life

Mr Farmer said the history of the beach was another reason it took out the accolade.
