Footage has emerged of Cristiano Ronaldo blazing a shot high over the crossbar from close range before Portugal’s clash with Slovenia.

In what may prove to be the final international tournament of his legendary career, Ronaldo has already set multiple records, including becoming the first player to feature at six different European Championships.

However, whilst Portugal are gearing up for a quarter-final clash with France this evening, Ronaldo is still yet to open his account at Euro 2024.

The 39-year-old provided a selfless assist for Bruno Fernandes in their 3-0 win over Turkey before being subbed off in Portugal’s final group game as they were defeated by Georgia.

If his finishing in a clip taken from before Portugal’s clash with Slovenia is anything to go by, Ronaldo might have a lengthy wait ahead of him before he can add to his 130 international goals.

In the clip Ronaldo joins his teammates in a shooting drill before the game, playing a one-two with a coach before taking a shot from the edge of the penalty box.

Ronaldo’s effort is parried away by the goalkeeper, and rather than rejoining the line, his poacher’s instincts are on full display as he chases down the rebound.

Unfortunately for the former Manchester United star, his subsequent shot flies well over the bar, earning jeers from the crowd in attendance at the Waldstadion.

The clash that followed proved tense, with Portugal dominating possession but unable to break the deadlock as the stalemate between the two sides continued into extra-time.

After Diogo Jota was brought down inside the penalty box on the brink of half time in extra time, Ronaldo had a golden opportunity to give Portugal the lead.

Ultimately though, Ronaldo fluffed his lines from twelve yards, with Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak producing a phenomenal save to keep his side’s hopes of progressing to the quarter-finals alive.

After neither side had managed to find opener across two hours of football, Ronaldo stepped up first in the penalty shootout.

This time however, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner struck home, before Diogo Costa became the first goalkeeper ever to save three penalties in a European Championship shootout as Portugal secured their place in the quarter-finals.

Ronaldo will have another chance to extend his record as the highest-goalscorer in Euros history when Portugal face Didier Deschamps’ side at the Volksparkstadion.
