The most hilarious Aussie dog names uncovered

If Snoop Dogg, Ke$ha and Mick Jagger ever got together over drinks, they would all have at least one thing in common – they each have at least one registered dog named after them in Tasmania.

An analysis of 10,000 names of registered dogs by the Launceston City Council has revealed that some dog owners have a taste for names that are as strange as they are unique.

According to The Mercury, the Launceston City Council in Tasmania has pronounced ‘Spotty Apples The First’ as the most unusual name.

The amused city council also came across registered pooches named Google, Boof-Head, Cat, Charles Darwin, Sparky Bolt Blitzen, Nissan Navara, Merlot McGillicuddy McKean and Hairy McClairy.

Popular television juggernauts like ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Vikings’ have also apparently prompted owners to name their dogs Khaleesi, Ragnar, Floki, and Rollo.

The world of science fiction has sparked a few name amusing choices too; Star Wars lovers have named their pets Vader, Chewie, Wookie, Yoda, and Leia all numbered on the list.

There are also at least five puppies named Boag, in homage to the famous Tasmanian-brewed beer called James Boag.

Aside from the weird and wonderful monikers, the survey also reported that Charlie was the most popular name for male dogs, while Bella took the crown for the most popular name for female puppies.

Naming dogs after singers and actors is also extremely popular, with the survey revealing several pooches named David Bowie, Bono, Leonardo, Jackie Chan, Denzel and Keanu.

Luxury brands seemed to be another strong influence, with Porsche, Versace, Armani, and Gucci all making the list of creative name choices.

The  Launceston City Council environmental services team leader Garry Causon said the holiday season brought some new challenges for dog owners, including houses being left open as families get together to enjoy Christmas.

‘There tend to be more people coming and going around people’s homes at this time of year and that means more chance of doors and gates accidentally being left open,’ he said.

‘It’s common for us to find more dogs wandering from home in the warmer months…There can be fireworks, and loud music and lots of activity that might startle your pets.’
