The most ridiculous April Fool’s Day gags that brands pulled

Everybody loves a good prank and many popular brands pulled the most ridiculous gags this April Fool’s Day. 

On April first brands rolled out bizarre new products such as T-Mobile releasing a smartphone shoe and Burger King revealing a new Chocolate Whopper.

Aside from fake product launches other brands made shocking announcements such as skincare brand Dermalogica announcing it’s name change to Dermatalogica after years of mispronunciation.

FEMAIL reveals some of the most outrageous pranks brands have pulled this April Fool’s Day. 

Dermalogica

Name change: Skincare brand Dermalogica joked that it was changing its name to Dermatalogica because it’s been mispronounced for years

Skincare brand Dermalogica’s CEO, Aurelian Lis, made an announcement that it was officially changing it’s name.

‘After years of mispronunciation by customers, dermatologists and even celebrities, the brand decided to change the company name to the commonly misused “Dermatalogica.”‘

The brand even released photos of products with the updated company logo on social media.

Glamsquad

Glamsquad, an app where you can book beauty services and Wag! a dog walking app, created a fake service where you can book on-demand hair styling appointments for you and your dog. 

The faux partnership promoted the idea that you and your puppy can get matching blowouts. 

Even though it was a hoax, we wish it were true because it sounds amazing and many customers were sad to hear that it wasn’t real.

Tarte Cosmetics

Tarte released a new makeup product – the Icy Betch palette – made up of green and blue sparkly hues.

The brand even previewed the palette on a model in their Instagram stories showing off the new colors. 

Fans of the cosmetics brand were so excited about the new eyeshadow until the brand announced it was actually an April Fools prank.

While the joke mostly went over well with fans, some customers were very annoyed by the prank and said it was rude of the brand to do.

Huda Beauty

Huda released a bag of sand with her brand’s label on it calling it Desert Dusk and pretended it was an exfoliator.

The product was made up of pure sand from the Arabian desert and was being marketed as vegan and 100 per cent cruelty-free.

Huda desribed the product saying, ‘It won’t irritate your skin so you can use it to transform your entire body.’

She announced that the whole thing was a joke admitting, ‘Even though we think the concept is bomb, we are actually not going to be selling this anytime soon.’

Facetune

The selfie-perfecting app Facetune announced they were releasing Catune to now make it possible for your cat’s selfies to be edited.

‘Wish your cat’s selfies could be as fab as yours?’ the brand asked. 

‘Introducing Catune by Facetune2. We got a ton of requests for a cat retouching app and it’s finally here! Fluffy deserves his own personal glam squad,’ the app went on to say.

The prank took customers all the way to the app store until it finally revealed, ‘You’ve been April Fool-ed! Your cat’s already flawless.’

Lego

Some of the features of the vacuum are to: sort by color and brick while separating dust and can be easily emptied plus it has five different speeds.

Despite the vacuum being fake, many people were upset because the product sounds like a life-saver. 

Rent the Runway

‘Everything you love about renting now available for woman’s best friend,’ the site stated.

Announcing that it will now be possible for you to rent clothes for your dog, the brand shared, ‘Now your furry friend can access the entire dream closet too – for every day, special occasions or just because. Woof, woof.’

Burger King

Burger King released a new menu item – the Chocolate Whopper and it’s a dessert burger.

The Chocolate Whopper features a flame-grilled chocolate patty with raspberry syrup, white chocolate rings, candied blood oranges, milk chocolate leaves and vanilla frosting.

The burger actually looks delicious and while the video is quite enticing, the brand wrote, ‘Coming soon. Maybe,’ at the end of the video before announcing it was a prank.

Yelp

Yelp scared a ton of people when it made anyone who was using the app think that their phone was broken.

The app displayed a picture of a shattered phone screen and at the bottom was a little pop-up.

The message said, ‘With Yelp, phone repair is just a search away. Busted screens are no joke, even on April Fool’s Day.’

Virgin Australia Airlines

Virgin Airlines debuted a new feature – in-flight cycling and shared a video of the new Virgin Australia Spin Class, ‘The world’s first in-flight cycling studio.’

Not only did the airline debut a workout class it also announced it would be giving out spin class active-wear on the flight for anyone participating in a session.

The video was believable as it showed stewardesses giving directions on how to use the bikes while it stated, ‘Earn velocity points for each kilometer cycled.’

Lush Cosmetics

Lush is known for its cruelty-free bath bombs and products so fans were excited to hear about the Beer Bath Bomb launch.

The Beer Bath Bomb was only available on April first and was intended to be a relaxing bath fizzer as well as a refreshing drink.

Lush boasted that the bath bombs were made with, ‘Protein-rich, ethically sourced vegan stout and mood-boosting organic roasted barley, hops, water and yeast.’

Roku

In a video released by the company a woman is wearing a pair of the socks and changing the channel with her toes.

‘Do messy snack hands keep you from using your Roku remote? Meet the new Roku Happy Streaming Socks,’ the site stated. 

Head and Shoulders

Classic shampoo brand Head and Shoulders announced it would be adding a new body wash called Knees and Toes. 

The brand announced the news on Twitter with a photo of the new product with the updated packaging on it.  

In the video a little stick figure washing his body with the soap danced to the song Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes and people actually fell for it. 

Hidden Valley Ranch

Some of the products included in the collection were Uh Huh Honey BBQ eyeshadow and Original Ranch Gloss, a lip gloss made with, ‘Exfoliating herbs and spices.’

The brand posted the new collection stating, ‘Welcome to Valley Girl Cosmetics, the only beauty line that tastes and smells like your favorite condiment, Hidden Valley Ranch. Explore our delicious products, and discover beauty with taste.’

Popchips

On the brand’s website the treats are described as ‘tasty balls’ with a, ‘Unique combination of a salty crunchy puffed outside and a burst of sweet swirly colorful creamy nectar inside.

‘We puff each ball to perfection and include only two of the tastiest parts of the unicorn!

‘Unicorn balls are perfect to Instagram, look great with a Valencia filter and guaranteed to get you all the likes.’

With flavors like Sweet and Salty, the website states the oils should be applied everywhere. 

T-Mobile

The sneakers are named Sidekick after the brand’s old phone and the hot pink high-top sneakers actually seemed pretty cool. 

‘Inspired by the past but stepping boldly into the future, it has revolutionary AI, headphones that double as chargers, personalized GPS guidance by John Legere, and more,’ the site boasted.

In the hilarious video the Bravo reality star promotes the SodaSoak, a new product from SodaStream that allows you to inject carbonated bubbles into the bath while adding a variety of different flavors to make it more enjoyable. 

The entire video is set up as an infomercial while Reza describes the new innovative product which he says is, ‘A whole new way to enjoy sparkling water by bathing in it.’

Describing the SodaSoak he says it has the same technology as the SodaStream but it’s even better because it, ‘Doesn’t just stop at tickling your tongue.’

Delicious! The reality star even jokes that you can add a variety of different flavors to the water to make it more enjoyable

‘You can choose from three levels of carbonation: sparkling bubbles, dazzling bubbles or ohmygosh bubbles,’ he jokes.

While the foolish two minute video is bizarrely funny, it’s actually quite convincing and it isn’t until you go to buy the product that you realize the prank.  

When you go to buy the product a pop-up fills the screen reading, ‘Before you go any further, this might be a good time for us to say GOTCHA!’

The site even went on to say, ‘Also, while you are here, how about buying an actual SodaStream product? Sorry, too soon?,’ before providing a link to share the video with friends writing, ‘Prank it forward.’
