A heroine lioness invites a pack of hungry wild dogs to attack her, allowing her cub to escape.

Shalin Fernando was on a safari drive through the Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana when she spotted a mum and her cub encircled by the hungry hoard.

The pack of at least nine predators close their circle on the pair, the lioness leaps out at a couple of the dogs inviting the rest of the pack to descend on her.

As the pack focus solely on the mum, the little cub sneaks away and hide in a tree away from the melee.

Shalin said: “I was speechless and worried for the lioness and her cub.

“We spent about half an hour with a beautiful lioness and her cub then moved on looking for wild dogs.

“When arriving on the scene the wild dogs came upon the female lioness and her cub and began threatening them.

The lioness was surrounded by a pack of at least nine wild dogs. Both lioness and cub survived the fight but one dog was seen limping the next day

“According to our guide, all of her previous cubs didn’t survive. “The dogs kept on trying to attack but later they gave up and moved on.

“The lioness and her cub were safe.

“We saw the wild dogs the next day and one of the dogs had been bitten and it was limping around.”
