The next David Warner? A Brett Lee clone? Five up and coming Aussie cricketers that could be our next international stars

Australia’s triumph at the recent Under-19 Cricket World Cup in South Africa could prove to be crucial in many ways.

With David Warner recently retiring and Usman Khawaja turning 38 this year, changes are inevitable in the Test, ODI and T20 teams.

Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc – both 34 – also won’t be around in the long term, as Pat Cummins seeks to keep the Aussies highly competitive in all three formats.

Daily Mail Australia has handpicked five players from the Under-19s squad to keep an eye on, with the quintet posted to join Jake Fraser-McGurk as future stars at international level.

It was also Australia’s first triumph in the tournament since 2010, in a squad that was captained by Mitchell Marsh also featuring the likes of Josh Hazlewood, Kane Richardson and Adam Zampa.

Harry Dixon (Victoria)

A left-handed opener already drawing comparisons to David Warner, such is his aggressive nature at the crease.

Dixon finished as the third-highest run scorer across the tournament and is tipped to feature for Victoria and the Melbourne Renegades sooner rather than later.

Sam Konstas (NSW)

While he wasn’t a standout in South Africa, the 18-year-old has already made his first-class debut for NSW.

Is being mentored by Shane Watson and in December, commentator Kerry O’Keeffe labelled the young gun the ‘best young opening bat he’s seen in the last couple of years.’

Hugh Weibgen (Queensland)

Skipper of the Under-19s side, the Queenslander is a classy number three who boasts a solid technique.

Carved out a ton against England during the group stage and then notched a patient 48 in the final against India.

Callum Vidler (Queensland)

Vidler is an out-and-out quick, reportedly clocking 143km last year. Snared 14 wickets across the tournament at an average of 11.71 – with some of his deliveries simply unplayable. 

Also took 5/49 and 3/85 in the Youth Test against England in Worcester back in September.

Oliver Peake (Victoria)

Joined the squad as an injury replacement, and soon made his presence felt.

Was the glue in the middle-order, with crucial scores of 49 in the semi-final versus Pakistan and 49 not out in the final against India.
