Despite making a fantastic start to life at The Open Championships, Rory McIlroy has paid the price of a wayward shot after breaking a supporter’s hand.
The Northern Irishman shot a thrilling 66 in the opening round of the 150th Open, leaving him second behind American Cameron Young, who shot 64 at St Andrews.
But it’s not been plain sailing for the four-time major champion, after one miss-hit tee shot left a spectator hospitalised and diagnosed with a fractured hand.

Charlie Kane, who runs social media for the PGA Tour, took to Twitter on Thursday to show off his bruised and swollen hand after a tee shot from McIlroy.
Kane wrote: ‘Fractured hand after Rory McIlroy’s drive landed on my knuckle. He shouted fore. I did not heed the warning. #TheOpen.’
The man, who was in attendance on the day as a supporter, was sent to St. Andrew’s Community Hospital and diagnosed with a fractured hand later that day.
In pictures shared on social media, Kane’s middle finger is shown to be extremely inflamed as a result of McIlroy’s shot.

The Northern Irishman has made a great start to the St Andrews course – after he drained a 55-foot for birdie on the opening hole in the first round on Thursday.
The parched conditions meant McIlroy was able to hit a long iron to the left-hand side of the 18th green to set up a closing birdie.
Pleased with his start, McIlroy said: ‘It was the round you hope will happen starting out in the Open and everything that you are supposed to do at the Old Course.
‘I took advantage of the easier holes and made my pars on more difficult ones.’
