The Rockettes reveal their go-to red lipstick

The Rockettes are just as well known for their immaculate identical looks as they are for their amazing moves onstage.

Ever since the dancing group was first founded back in 1932, every member has been brought into the fold with a spot in the high-kicking line, a glittering uniform and a perfect bright red lipstick.

As the years have gone by, and with fast-moving advances in cosmetics, the ladies’ favorite lippy has changed multiple times. But in a recent interview with Allure, the dancers dished on their current pick, which they buy in bulk for the group.

The latest lipstick of choice for the Rockettes is the Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick in 01 Always Red, which retails at Sephora for $14 a bottle.

‘I think we discovered the shade about two years ago,’ Sagan Rose told the publication.

‘One of the girls bought it and then we all slowly started trying it until everyone got hooked and now I think we all use it.’

Another dancer, Sam, revealed that each dancer will ‘usually go through about a tube a season.’

Each of the dancers’ make-up stations are home to at least two tubes of the super-red lippy.

Between 80 Rockettes, with 36 being on stage at any one time, that means that the show goes through $1,120 worth of lipstick every holiday season.

The group frequently performs six shows per day, with each of the separate 40-person casts splitting the shifts.

The shade is perfect for holding a true red pigment, not veering too heavily into the blueish or orange hues, and therefore perfectly matches the holiday-friendly costumes the women wear.

It also is resistance against sweat and smudging – a necessity in a show with multiple costume changes.

‘There is nothing worse that going on stage and looking good, feeling good, and then you come off and there’s a red streak on your face an that’s what everyone was looking at,’ Sagan told Allure.

Before swapping over to the Sephora liquid brand, the group previously stuck to a mix of M.A.C. products: the Cherry Lip Liner topped with Russian Red Lipstick.
