A Moroccan-inspired rug has become the unlikely must-have item of the season after popping up in the most stylish homes on social media.
The shaggy monochrome floor covering, featuring a bold criss-cross design, is currently sweeping Instagram after being given the seal of approval from achingly cool fashion bloggers and interiors experts.
Authentic Beni Ourain rugs – which were traditionally woven by Berber tribes living in the Atlas Mountains and feature geometric patterns on a cream or white base – can fetch eye-watering sums.
And while high-end homages can still come with hefty price tags of around £750, the ubiquity of the piece now means you can snap up similar styles on the high street for as little as £84.
Interior designer Maurizio Pellizzoni told FEMAIL the reason this design has become so popular is that it can create the illusion of space, as well as add texture to a room.
A Moroccan-inspired rug featuring a black and white diamond design has been sweeping Instagram’s chicest homes this season
The stylish checked rug makes the perfect addition to your living room this winter
With numerous versions of the monochrome rug out there, it has become a must-have item
Pellizzoni explained: ‘This style of rug has returned as an on-trend item into our home interiors because of the move towards a more contemporary look within interior design.
‘One that particularly shies away from minimalism into maximalism for 2018.
‘The diamond shape in this pattern can add a geometric dimension to the room and the monochrome design creates a tridimensional effect, which creates the illusion of space very effectively.’
Retailers including Trouva, The Rug Seller, and Achia are all offering different versions of the trendy mat, ranging from anywhere from £84 to £750.
