The Shining’s Shelley Duvall, 74, gives rare interview where she talks being ‘hurt’ by Hollywood as her partner says she calls the FBI and sleeps in her car… 22 years after she left showbusiness

The Shining star Shelley Duvall – who played Wendy Torrance in the legendary 1980 Stanley Kubrick horror film – gave a rare interview this week.

The 74-year-old star has a film coming this spring called The Forest Hills, her first in 22 years, and that is why she agreed to talk.

During her chat with The New York Times, she said that she left showbusiness in 2002 because people in Hollywood ‘hurt’ her.

‘I was a star; I had leading roles,’ she told the paper. ‘People think it’s just aging, but it’s not. It’s violence.’

Duvall would not elaborate on what kind of violence she suffered.

She then asked the writer how they would you feel if people were really nice, and then, suddenly, ‘on a dime turn on you.’

‘You would never believe it unless it happens to you. That’s why you get hurt, because you can’t really believe it’s true,’ said Duvall.

The star was photographed in her white SUV while in Austin, Texas for the profile.

The writer shared that often Shelley sleeps in her car, which is crammed with used takeout containers.

Duvall, who suffers from Diabetes and has a swollen foot, spent most of the interview jumping around subjects and mentioning song lyrics.

She also kept photographs from her old films in a bag stuffed into her glove box.

Her partner of 30 years Dan Gilroy also chimed in saying that her 2016 interview with Phil McGraw was support to help her career, but it ended up being damning and made her appear ‘odd.’

But then he added that he does worry about her, especially when she sleeps in her car.

Gilroy also explained that when her Los Angeles home was destroyed in the 1994 Northridge earthquake, they moved to Texas hoping for a happier life.

That is when things went ‘downhill’ and she ‘started becoming afraid of things, maybe didn’t want to work.”

Gilroy added, ‘It’s really hard to pin it on any one thing.’

She became paranoid, ‘kind of delusional,’ thinking she was being attacked, he said, and would even call the FBI for help.

He then added: ‘It went south like that.’

Duvall’s last acting appearance in a film was in Manna From Heaven, which was released in 2002.

Following the movie’s release, the actress retreated from public life and retired.
