Extreme winds in Kansas ripped the roof off a grade school in Kansas while class was in session.

Elementary and middle school children in Haviland, Kansas, were unable to attend class on Wednesday and Thursday after the roof of the cafeteria was blown off Haviland Grade School.

Wind gusts exceeding 50mph ripped the structure off the building and crashed it down onto two vehicles in the school parking lot.

About 70 children in grades kindergarten through 8th were in the building on Tuesday at 3pm when the incident occurred, but no one was injured.

Several vehicles were damaged after the Haviland Grade School’s roof was ripped off on Tuesday due to powerful winds 

Surveillance footage shows the entire section of the roof above the cafeteria blow off before crumpling on two cars in the school parking lot. 

On Wednesday, class was cancelled so crew members could finish the damaged roof. 

The job is expected to take two days with the regualr school schedule resuming on Friday.

Haviland Grade School has yet to release information about how much it will cost to repair the roof or why the old version was unable to withstand the fierce winds.

Several vehicles that were in the lot during the strong gusts were damaged after the roof came crashing down.

Haviland is located 100 miles outside of Wichita, Kansas.
