The special meaning behind Princess Mary’s stunning ruby tiara and matching necklace

Crown Princess Mary of Demark has wowed in a glittering ruby tiara and matching necklace and earrings at a gala banquet in honour of Queen Margrethe II’s 50th jubilee on Sunday.

The Australian-born royal accessorised her stunning full-length champagne and black lace gown with the priceless jewels that have a fascinating history involving French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.

Made to look like a sparkling branch of diamond leaves with ruby berries, the tiara has a coordinating necklace and earrings that are customisable and have been worn by Mary in the past in a number of configurations.

The necklace and tiara are family heirlooms which were originally made by a now-unknown jeweller and commissioned by Napoleon for the late Queen of Sweden in 1804 for his extravagant coronation. 

They made their way to the Danish royal family when the Swedish queen’s daughter married the future King Frederik VIII in 1869 and have been in their hands ever since.

Mary attended the gala dinner in Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen alongside Frederik, while other guests included the Queen herself as well as King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden and presidential couples from Finland and Iceland.

The night before, Mary donned a stunning gown and $12,000 tiara at a Gala performance.

The royal attended the event alongside her husband Prince Frederik of Denmark, son Prince Christian and daughter Princess Isabella.

Princess Mary wore a sparkly floor-length dress designed with layers from the waist down and short sleeves.

The gala performance was held at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen.

According to Express UK, the Diamond Necklace Tiara was created sometime between 1900 and 1910 and was sold as a necklace featuring diamonds, spinels and rubies.

The jewels were bought by Princess Mary herself for €8,050 – around $11,929 AUD.

The Princess completed the look with a matching clutch purse and the ensemble embodied pure elegance.

And this isn’t the first time the Princess has worn the stunning dress – she also donned it for Crown Prince Frederik’s 50th birthday in 2018.

Both Princess Mary and Prince Frederik can be seen wearing a blue sash over the attire, which symbolises their role as a member of the royals.

Prince Frederik and Princess Mary married on May 14, 2004 at Copenhagen Cathedral, with the newly minted Crown Princess opting for a beautiful gown by Danish designer Uffer Frank and a veil first used by Crown Princess Margaret of Sweden in 1905.

Their first child, Prince Christian Valdemar Henri John, was born October 15, 2005; Princess Isabella Henrietta Ingrid Margrethe followed on April 21, 2007.

Almost four years later Princess Mary and Prince Frederik welcomed twins, Princess Josephine Sophia Ivalo Mathilda and Prince Vincent Frederik Minik Alexander at the Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen on January 8, 2011.
