The Today show plunges to a new low with cringeworthy Trump segment

How low can they go? Today hosts Georgie and Deborah awkwardly giggle at Donald Trump impersonator in a cringeworthy segment

Channel Nine’s Today show failed to ‘wake up’ on Thursday morning.

In one of the lowest moments in the program’s recent history, an entire segment was dedicated to a Donald Trump impersonator.

Hosts Georgie Gardner and Deborah Knight awkwardly giggled as comedian John Di Domenico performed an impression of the U.S. president that he’d clumsily tailored for Australian audiences.

The interview had a rather confusing start, as the presenters did not introduce John as an impersonator but instead claimed they had an interview with Trump himself

After crossing ‘live’ to Washington D.C., John began: ‘Hello, Australia. I know how much you love me. And I just want to let you love me. And I just want to let you know everything’s going great!’

The actor, who has been doing impressions of Trump for 12 years, then made several jokes about the president and even referenced the Mueller Report.

John then awkwardly complimented Today’s female hosts.

‘I just wanted to share it with you, my favourite people, the Australians, especially Deb and Georgie, who by the way, you look tremendous. You look really, really incredible. I have to tell you!’ he said.

Playing along with the pitiful segment, Georgie and Deborah asked the comedian about Trump’s recent state visit to Britain and Scott Morrison’s surprise election victory in Australia.

‘Scott Mo. I love that name. That’s a good one, I have to tell you,’ John said, clearly mispronouncing Mr Morrison’s nickname, ScoMo.

Sources told Woman’s Day earlier this week that Channel Nine is desperate to bring back Karl, who was sacked in December, following months of plummeting ratings.

‘It’s 100 per cent correct that they are actively chasing Karl to come back – everyone at [Nine] knows Today needs the TV version of open-heart surgery to even survive,’ said a network insider.

Industry rumours: Sources told Woman’s Day earlier this week that Channel Nine is desperate to bring back Karl, who was sacked in December, following months of plummeting ratings

They added that Karl must first ‘publicly acknowledge he had to leave because of personal issues’ before they allow him back on the program.

A representative for Karl denied the claims, however, telling Daily Mail Australia on Tuesday: ‘There’s no truth to this rumour whatsoever.

‘Karl is not returning to Today, nor are there any talks taking place – secret, or otherwise – to that effect.’
