Portugal has been named the best country in the world for travellers, according to a new survey. 

The global travel agency Flight Centre analysed responses from more than 170,000 travellers from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and the UK to determine the top 10 highest-rated countries and cities this year.

First-place Portugal gained an overall traveller satisfaction rate of 94 per cent, while the Cook Islands, an island country in the South Pacific, followed closely behind in second place with a satisfaction rate of 93 per cent.

Australia ranked third on the list, with Japan coming fourth and Spain fifth.

Travellers were also impressed with Singapore, which ranked sixth on the list, and Greece, which ranked seventh.

Rounding out the top 10 were Ireland (eighth), Turkey (ninth) and Vietnam (10th).

In the cities ranking, Perth, the capital of Western Australia, placed first.  

The capital of Queensland, Brisbane, on the opposite side of Australia, ranked second, while Queenstown, in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island, came third.

Over in Japan, Tokyo, its busy capital, stood out to travellers, which ranked fourth on the list.

Christchurch in New Zealand came in fifth.

Rarotonga, an island in the Cook Islands described by one traveller as ‘like one big resort’ that’s known for its white sand beaches and turquoise lagoons, ranked sixth on the list.

The Catalonian capital, Barcelona, came seventh, while Australia’s second-most-popular city, Melbourne, ranked eighth.

Travellers were also impressed by the historic city of Rome (ninth), and Vancouver in Canada, which came 10th.

Cook Islands Tourism CEO Karla Eggelton said: ‘This recognition comes at a time as we continue to enhance our tourism offerings, focusing on regenerative visitor initiatives and more authentic experiences.

‘It also underscores the dedication of our tourism industry and local community in providing unforgettable experiences for our visitors.’ 

The Cook Islands welcomed a total of 163,552 visitors Between June 2023 and July 2024, 2,533 of which were from the UK and Nordic regions.
