The Traitors’ Jonny says he ‘believed he was invincible when he joined the army at 17 but suddenly felt very weak’ when he lost his leg serving in Afghanistan

Jonny Holloway spoke about how he went from feeling ‘invincible to very weak’ when he lost his leg while serving in Afghanistan on Thursday’s episode of The Traitors.

The 31-year-old from Bedfordshire was touring Afghanistan near Lashkar Gah, Helmand Province in 2014 when an explosive launched his 20-ton military vehicle 14ft in the air.

Jonny, who was banished by his fellow teammates during the show, talked about the devastating impact his disability had on his mental health.

Contestants were tasked with building a catapult, something which required them to carry heavy equipment through the grounds of the Scottish castle.

Jonny said: ‘We got to a point where the track was really difficult with equipment that wasn’t heavy at the start suddenly feels 10 times heavier, people were adamant they wanted to get the sledge all the way to the top.

He continued as footage showed him falling over due to the sheer weight of the wood he was carrying: ‘The changing point in my life was when I joined the army at 17, everyone said I was so different when I came back from training. I knew who I was at that point and I came out of my shell.’

Jonny fought two years to save his injured leg after narrowly escaping death but made the difficult decision to have it amputated due to constant pain and infections.

Harry said: ‘Jonny works harder than people in every challenge and he has his challenge already before he has set foot in any mission.

‘He’s lost his leg fighting for our country and he’s still smiling every day.’

Harry, 22, who also serves in the military broke down in tears after Jonny was voted out by contestants on the round table.

Revealing his identity Jonny said: ‘ You may be wondering while I’m smiling. I’m smiling because I can see my kids soon. No hard feelings to everyone, I am a faithful.’

Fans took to X, formerly Twitter, to share their sadness after Jonny was voted out.

One wrote: ‘Harry should not have voted for Jonny. He didn’t have to, was always going to get emotional, and guaranteed, once the it has settled, someone will speculate ‘but what if it was guilt?’ You cannot draw attention to yourself like that.

Others said: ‘Paul needs to go for the way he wrote Jonny on the board if nothing else’.

As well as the injury to his leg, Jonny was blinded in one eye and a brain injury which affected his short-term memory and concentration
