Hero bystanders have saved a man from the wreckage of a burning car just moments before it exploded, killing the driver.

After witnessing the car plowing into the truck, Youssef Tawk and his friend ran to the vehicle which had become wedged underneath a truck in Preston, north Melbourne on Saturday night.

‘We heard a big bag and dropped our gear and ran to the car,’ Mr Tawk told 7 News.

‘There were flames everywhere,’ he added.

The heroes tried to pry the driver from the car but couldn’t open the door, as it was stuck under the tray of the truck.

The passenger’s door however was accessible and the men were able to free the man just seconds before the car exploded.

The driver, believed to be in his 30s, was instantly killed.

Mr Tawk has been hailed a hero by police after the entire event was caught on camera.

Mr Tawk said he saw two people in the car but was only able to grab the passenger after saying the car was too hot to retrieve the driver.

It’s been alleged by witnesses working at a nearby factory that they had seen the red the Holden Commodore doing burnouts with sparks spurting out of the wheels just minutes before it crashed into the truck.

CCTV had also captured the two men drinking at Cramer’s Hotel and leaving in the car just 30 minutes before the crash.

The passenger remains in critical condition in intensive care.
