The unusual new health trend women are using to ease muscle pain and banish cellulite from their legs and thighs – so does it really work?

  • Women are using ‘roll shaper’ machines that claim to reduce cellulite and fat
  • Wellness business Studio Figura shared a video on TikTok using the machine
  • The roller is also said to shape the body and reduce unwanted stretch marks
  • But Australian nurse Madeline Calfas said the treatment isn’t permanent
  • Ms Calfas said the rollers are good for sore muscles and to boost blood flow

A new health trend has led to thousands of women turning to new ‘roll shaper’ lymphatic drainage machines that claim to repair sore muscles, burn body fat and reduce the appearance of cellulite and stretch marks after a few treatments.

The unusual trend surfaced on social media after the business Studio Figura shared a video on TikTok, which has been viewed more than 8.3 million times.

The machine operates by using specifically designed rollers that spin quickly in a circular motion to massage the body while also using infrared lights to boost blood flow.

But Madeline Calfas, an Australian registered nurse and anti-ageing specialist from The Wellness Group, told FEMAIL that while the rollers do reduce the appearance of unwanted cellulite and fat cells, it’s often only temporary.

Ms Calfas said the effects of roller machines aren’t permanent and the results often only last a few days after each treatment.

‘The rollers essentially massage the tissue itself to push and move any extra fluid or lymphatic tissue that might be accumulating,’ she said.

She said using this method will stretch out fat cells under the skin but not eliminate them completely, as the cell walls are too strong to remove simply by rolling.

‘In regards to weight loss, the best way to do this is through consistent dieting and exercise,’ she said.

While some customers online have said they have lost centimetres from their waist, hips and thighs by using the machines, Ms Calfas said the fat cells will slowly reform and return to the area.

She said the ‘only way’ to permanently remove fat cells is through surgical treatments such as liposuction.

While the rollers only offer a temporary solution to reducing the appearance of cellulite and stretch marks, Ms Calfas said they are beneficial to loosen tight muscles and increase blood flow to different areas of the body.

This is ideal for those who have tight muscles after going to the gym or older men and women who may experience stained areas, such as the lower back or legs.

‘They definitely feel good and are relaxing to use as they massage the body,’ she said.

The rollers are a good alternative option to receiving a relaxing hand massage.
