The VERY glamorous life of Baroness Helena Morrissey’s daughter Florence

While her mother may be considered one of London’s chicest and most talented women, Florence Clementine is forging her own path as both a musical heavyweight and fashion darling.

The eldest daughter of City financier Helena Morrissey, 55, who entered the House of Lords as a Tory peer last year, 26-year-old Flo captured the heart of Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele in 2015.

The mother-of-two makes up one half of folk duo The Clementines with her husband, artist and poet Benjamin Clementine, 32, with whom she shares daughter Helena and son Julian.

Florence, who splits her time between trendy Notting Hill and Los Angeles, can be found on Portobello Road, flogging vintage Chanel, Prada and Yves Saint Laurent to west London’s bustling fashion scene.

The singer began writing songs at 14, and three years later gained a place at the prestigious BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology where she studied music for two years.

After releasing a video of herself preforming the song If You Can’t Love This All Goes Away online, she was signed by Glassnote Records in 2014.

Her voice was a hit with critics, who compared her to the likes of Laura Nyro and Billie Holiday.

A year later, at the age of 19, and her debut single Pages of Gold thrust Florence into the spotlight, spending the year promoting her album at various festivals, including Glastonbury.

It was the same year she caught the eye of Gucci’s creative director, who wasted no time casting her to his front row for SS 16. Florence was hailed a ‘new front row star’ by British Vogue.

She began dating singer Benjamin, whose debut album At Least for Now won the 2015 Mercury Prize, in 2016.

Speaking of embracing his individuality in a 2017 interview with the Evening Standard, he said of Flo: ‘Luckily the person I’m with understands because they’re an artist themselves. I used to think I’d be better off being with somebody who wasn’t an artist. But that’s a lie.’

In January that year, Morrissey released an album of covers with American singer-songwriter Matthew E. White entitled Gentlewoman, Ruby Man which received positive critical reviews.

Florence and  Benjamin had their first child, Julian Jupiter Richard Sainte-Clementine on the mum’s birthday, Christmas Day in 2017.

As she walked down the aisle her oldest brother played guitar while the rest of her siblings sang George Harrison’s My Sweet Lord.

‘At the end my youngest picked up the tambourine and skipped down the aisle and my youngest followed her’, revealed Helena on an episode of Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs.

Congratulating her daughter on her third wedding anniversary on Instagram, the Baroness insisted that her daughter looked ‘beautiful, radiant and happy’ on her big day.

Florence gave birth to her daughter Helena – named after her grandmother – in October 2019, and the financier often shares adorable snaps of the duo on her Instagram page.

In June 2019, Flo and her husband collaborated with British Vogue and Gucci to create a short film called ‘The Performers’, offering an insight into their lives together.

Flo and her children spent lockdown with her parents and siblings at the family’s second home in Berkshire.

During the second week of the Covid pandemic, Helena shared how grateful she was that she was able to spend time with her grandchildren.

Sharing a sweet snap of herself with Helena, she said: ‘Each of us faces our own stresses and strains of course. But also much to be thankful for. For me being able to cuddle this smiley little lady, my granddaughter Helena is right up there!’

In February last year, Florence and her Benjamin came together to release their first single as husband and wife musical duo The Clementines, called Calm Down.

In a March episode of Desert Island Discs, Helena opted to play her daughter’s song as she believed it was apt during the health crisis.

She said: ‘Both of them have recorded in the past as solo artists, this was released at the start of the Covid crisis.

‘It has resonance for me because it’s my own daughter and son-in-law, but also I love the intent of the song. They talk about calming down within a couple, but I think it can apply in so much of our life’.
