The Voice Australia gets mixed reviews as new judges join series – with some slamming the show for too many ads while others predict it will be the best season yet: ‘A festival of mediocrity’

The Voice Australia returned for the 2024 season on Monday night.

With a new team of judges and a whole host of talented singers, the reality show garnered praise – and derision – from viewers.

Several shared their thoughts to X, with many saying the new series looks promising, but others complaining about the persistent ad breaks.

‘Free to air channels wonder why they are losing viewers – I turned in to watch The Voice not an occasional song amidst too too many ads and also promos for what’s to come’ complained one person.

Another said: ‘Of course we need another ad break’ adding a series of eye roll emojis.

Sharing their opinion on the episode, one viewer posted: ‘A festival of mediocrity peppered with interruptions for sponsors’.

‘Too much padding and not enough singing’ complained someone else on the social media site.

Others were enthused by the new season and impressed by the skills of the competitors.

‘If some of tonight’s performances are anything to go by, I think this season is going to one of the best yet!’ wrote one.

Someone else said: ‘That was a good first episode cant wait for tomorrow night’s episode!’

Yet another agreed: ‘Looking forward to see what’s in store for tomorrow night’s episode’.

Outgoing coaches Rita Ora, Jessica Mauboy and Jason Derulo will not be reprising their roles on the popular show.

According to a production insider, the reason for the switch-up was the star’s pay cheques, and a desire from producers to keep costs down.

The decision was made last year and the casting team were looking for quite some time, the insider told Yahoo Lifestyle.

The insider added that salary increases are necessary to keep returning stars on the show and the price tag for the former crop was ‘too expensive’.

‘The company line was that Jessica, Rita and Jason were all too busy, but I don’t think anyone is too busy to pick up these sorts of pay cheques.

‘It certainly did have a lot to do with keeping the costs down.’
