The Voice Australia: Jessica Mauboy breaks down in tears on air over heartbreaking body image pain

Jessica Mauboy delivered an emotional message on television Monday night.

The Voice Australia judge, 34, broke down in tears as popular contestant David Aumua expressed his body image issues.

When he revealed he held back from auditioning for the Channel Seven show for so long because of his weight, the Burn hitmaker couldn’t hold back her tears.

‘I was more embarrassed to show myself,’ the aspiring singer told judges Jessica, Guy Sebastian, Jason Derulo and Rita Ora.

‘I guess growing up a big bloke, choosing music was a tough choice for me because I felt like my songs that I’m into, my body doesn’t suit that kind of genre.’

He continued: ‘I knew I had the voice, but my body kinda held me back. And then I was like, “You know what? Stuff it.”‘

Jessica shared her empathy with the 24-year-old, saying it ‘hurts’ her to hear he ‘didn’t feel worthy enough’ to go on the show.

‘Our mind, you know, it definitely plays tricks on us when we have all the noise on the outside,’ she said.

Jessica continued: ‘But when you can look in the mirror and acknowledge yourself and respect yourself and tell yourself, “I got this. I have the ability. I have the strength. I have the power. I am me. I am unique. There is nobody else like me in this world.”‘

It was at this point Jessica became choked up and had to push through the tears to finish her heartwarming message to David.

‘And I just love that you have come to a moment in your life that you’ve realised how great you are. How great you really are,’ she said.

It was unsurprising when David then went on to choose Jessica as his coach going forward into the season.

Jessica first came to the nation’s attention as a shy teenager from Darwin in 2006 as the runner-up of Australian Idol.

She revealed to Show And Tell in 2015 she had never worried about her body image in the early days of her career until she was thrust into the limelight.

As shock jock judge Kyle Sandilands made cruel comments about her ‘jelly belly’, Jessica said she became more defiant about loving her body as it was.
