The Voice Australia judges give Mol Turner a standing ovation but her unique performance divides Australia: ‘What was this?’

Mol Turner turned The Voice Australia blind auditions on its head Monday night when she stepped out on stage with an incredibly unique performance.

The 17-year-old cheerleader inspired a standing ovation from the judges and audience alike for her heavy metal screamo rendition of Toxic by Britney Spears.

But while she earned the respect of the judges, and turned Kate Miller-Heidke’s chair, viewers at home were left divided over her ‘horrific’ and ‘impressive’ performance.

‘What was this? I’m sorry but this wasn’t enjoyable… It was screaming all the way… Was this for ratings… Please!’ one person wrote on Instagram.

‘I am so glad there were no chairs turned, that was horrific, yeah heavy metal and Opera two genres I do not listen to,’ another added.

A third wrote: ‘So much demonic trash is being pushed but Australia is loving it sorry not me I follow god and Jesus.’

‘Not my cup of tea, but the girl has raw power. Glad she has the chance to perform on stage. All talents should be showcased,’ yet another wrote.

Despite the negative criticism Mol received online, the South Coast native also saw an outpouring of love and support from many more Aussies.

‘Love it or hate it but that was amazing well done Mol! I loved every second!’ one user cheered.

Another fan added: ‘Ooooft her growl was [fire emoji] so good to finally see someone singing screamo.’

‘Mol that was so impressive and unique!’ someone else wrote, while another said: ‘I LOVE THIS.’

‘Now if only they chose interesting talent over plastic pop this show would be interesting. This chick is amazing,’ yet another viewer commented.

Mol only heard positive things from the judges, despite three of them not turning around, with Guy Sebastian saying he ‘struggled’ to see how he could coach her.

‘That was so damn cool. Your scream voice is so aggressive, it wasn’t like there was distortion on your voice, that was just your voice,’ he added.

Meanwhile, Kate, 42, turned her chair at the last second, saying she thought Mol’s performance was ‘so delightful and surprising’.
