The Voice: Australian chart topper nails her audition – but do you recognise her from the noughties?

Australian chart-topper nails her audition on The Voice as she performs a club anthem – but do you remember her from the early noughties?

The Voice viewers were left in awe on Sunday night, as Bec Caruana auditioned with a powerful rendition of Rozalla’s Everybody’s Free.

But it wasn’t the first time the 45-year-old wowed audiences with her talent, as in the early 2000s she was a major pop star in her own right – signing to record label Warner Music, bagging two top 40 singles and landing tons of radio play.

Bec is probably most well-known for her 2002 single Dance All Night, which she says was played ‘at least five or six times a day’ on Australian radio.

Do you recognise this noughties icon? Viewers were left gobsmacked on Sunday night when Bec Caruana auditioned for The Voice with a powerful rendition of Rozalla’s Everybody’s Free – but some fans may already recognise her from her pop star past

Bec, who won Channel Ten’s Star Search seven weeks in a row as a teen, also released another single, Bump, before unveiling her debut album Electric Beach.

But with the arrival of streaming services, Bec said her time in the industry came to an end rapidly because people ‘just didn’t buy music anymore’.

‘I went from pop star to waitress in nought to five seconds,’ she said prior to her audition.

‘I call myself a bit of a casualty of the early 2000s. I had a couple of top 40 singles and radio hits, and the bottom kind of fell out of the music industry when file-sharing happened.

‘Record companies didn’t have the money that they once had.’

After belting out the club anthem on Sunday, Bec managed to wow coaches Rita Ora and Jessica Mauboy – who both turned their chairs and fought to get her on their team.

‘Who are you!’ Jess said, before Rita added: ‘It feels like you have a lot of professional history…’

After hearing her story, Rita said: ‘That’s real life. It happens. I feel like why you are here and fighting is inspiring. You should be really proud of yourself.’
