The Voice star’s daughter crushed to death by Range Rover

A contestant on TV’s The Voice has been unable to tell his heartbroken wife the ‘gruesome’ details of how their toddler daughter died.

Paul Black, 49, was walking hand-in-hand with two-year-old Pearl when the handbrake failed on a parked Range Rover in Merthyr Tydfil, south Wales.

The car rolled into the singer and his two children as they walked back from playing on the swings in a nearby park.

An inquest heard police are investigating the incident and that there could be criminal proceedings brought against the car’s owner.

Mr Black said today: ‘I was there to see the gruesome details but I want to protect my wife from it.

‘I haven’t been able to tell her what happened, she doesn’t know.’

A coroner agreed he would do his best to avoid any ‘unnecessary distress’ for Mr Black’s grief-stricken wife Gemma, 37.

Police are investigating the tragedy and a file of evidence will be sent to the Crown Prosecution Service.

The inquest heard there could be criminal proceedings against Andrew Williams, owner of the Range Rover, who had just parked it on the driveway of his home after a shopping trip.

Singer and drummer Paul joked he was the son of judge and fellow Welshman Tom Jones when he appeared on The Voice in 2014.

He also convinced judge Will.i.am that he was from the same town in New Jersey as Frank Sinatra.

Paul described himself as a ‘broken man’ after the accident in the village.

He said at the time: ‘No father should have to see what I saw, their beautiful little girl crushed like that.

‘Pearl was every single star in every single sky, she was as bright as the stars, when she looked at you with those eyes and she would melt your heart.

‘She was the greatest dancer and she has left a massive hole in our hearts.

‘The world will be a darker place without her. She was the reason we all lived.’

Jaguar LandRover are helping South Wales Police with their examination of the 17-year-old car.

A previous hearing was told the vehicle was left insecure, with the automatic transmission in park and the handbrake fully applied.

The unoccupied RangeRover rolled down the drive, across a road and hit a wall which collapsed onto Pearl.

Tattoo artist Paul and his seven-month-old son Ace(corr) survived the accident in August.

Serious collision officer Pc Tony Farr told the hearing in Aberdare that tests were being carried out on the RangeRover’s breaking efficiency.

Glamorgan Valleys Coroner Andrew Barkley sais he would use ‘tact and sense’ when the inquest is resumed early next year.

Entertainer Paul said after the brief hearing: ‘Not a second goes by that we don’t think of our little girl.

‘This morning it all seemed very real.

‘We will never have the the same lives as we had.

‘She was just an enormous part of our lives and she will always be.

‘My love for her still grows every for her as my wife’s does and our family’s.’

Paul thanked the people of Merthyr Tydfil who have raised more than £20,000 in Peartl’s name in the last two months.

Dozens of people went on a walk for Pearl at the weekend and jumped in every muddy puddle on the way like her favourite TV character Peppa Pig.

Devastated Gemma, who was not at the hearing was tattooed with the words ‘mummy’s girl’ before Pearls funeral.
