The Voice: The judges get close to filling out their teams while the Blind Auditions wind down

As the blind auditions came closer to ending, battle for team members heated on Monday night’s episode of The Voice on NBC. 

Coaches Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, Ariana Grande and John Legend all pulled out all the stops to sign the remaining contestants they needed to complete their teams.

The episode came to a close with a powerful performance by Brittany Bree, who got all four judges to turn their chairs before choosing John Legend.

The first contestant for round 5 of the blind auditions was Ryleigh Plank, 20, from Ft. Meyers, Florida who sang ‘Anyone’ by Demi Lovato.

Ryleigh said to the camera that music was her life and helped ‘pull her out of the trenches.’ She said she didn’t have many friends, had problems with bullying and struggled with depression and anxiety.

Ariana Grande, 28, who turned around told her she really thought she could win this thing. Kelly Clarkson, 39, who also turned around said she liked her cool look.

She ultimately chose Ariana who said she was so excited to have her on her team. ‘I love Ryleigh,’ said Ariana.

The judges also came up with a little game, where each time Kelly said the word ‘navigating’ Ariana and Blake, 45, would clink their glasses and drink.

The next contestant was Jershika Maple, 24, from Texas, who said she worked as a security guard from a tech company but she said singing was her real passion.

She couldn’t believe she was on the show. She shared that Rose Short, former Voice finalist, encouraged her audition for the show. She sang New Edition’s ‘Can you Stand the Rain.’ Kelly and John Legend ,42, both pressed their buzzers and turned around. 

John told her she delivered such a powerful electric performance and that he wanted her to pick him. Kelly told her she was so great and told her she would look good in her turquoise jacket.

Kelly started dancing and John told her that no one likes a sore winner.

‘I’m so sorry John,’ said Kelly.

Manny Keith, 31, of Miami, Florida was the next contestant. He said he was a huge Ariana fan and almost cried when he heard she was going to be a coach on the show.

He said he didn’t start singing until he was 14 because he was very shy. He said his Mom encouraged her and that it became a passion for him. His Mom passed away from cancer, but he said he was still grateful to share his story of loss and hope with others.

Manny sang Dua Lipa’s ‘Break My Heart.’ Blake was the only judge who turned around. 

He told Ariana that he was her biggest fan. Blake then pointed to a man in the audience who proclaimed that he was the biggest Ariana fan. 

Blake told him he was an incredible singer and signed him to his team and then took him over to his win cam.

He was followed by Austin Percario, 25, from Los Angeles, Ca, who said he was once signed to a boy band but that none of their songs ever took off. 

He said any of these coaches turning around would give him the confidence he needed. He sang Niall Horan’s ‘This Town.’ Unfortunately, none of the judges turned around.

Ariana asked him if he was nervous and he said he was. Kelly told him that she loved his tone and loved his voice.

Austin: He was followed by Austin Percario, 25, from Los Angeles, Ca, who said he was once signed to a boy band but that none of their songs ever took off

Then KJ Jennings, 21, from Austin, Texas took the stage. She said she loved to wake surf with her family. She also liked dirt biking and bee keeping and other adrenaline activities that she said prepared her for the stage. 

She said she loved jazz and decided to sing ‘Put Your Records On’ by Corinne Bailey Rae. Her parents told her they were so proud of her.

John and Blake both turned around. John told her he felt that she was an adventurous singer. He told her he loved what she was doing.

‘This is the dream,’ she said.

KJ decided to pick Team John. John got up and said he was so happy. He labeled his phone John’s win cam and took a selfie with her and gave her a Team John robe to wear.

John also picked up Sabrina Dias for his team who sang ‘Garato de Ipanema.’ 

Kelly turned around for Xavier Cornell, 17, from Los Angeles, who sang Katy Perry’s ‘Teenage Dream.’ She told him that she thought he was going to be the dark horse in this competition. 

Libianca, 20, a soul singer, who grew up in Cameron, Africa, and then moved to America when she was 13 took the stage next. She said it was hard to adjust when she first moved to the US because in Africa it was a compliment to call someone fat but learned quickly that in America it was not. She sang ‘Good Days’ by SZA and Ariana immediately turned around. Blake turned around right after.

Jared Brasher, 26, from Huntsville, AL, who said baseball was always his true love was the next contestant. 

He said he was drafted into baseball but it didn’t work out. He said music was always his passion, but that he had never performed before a live audience. He sang Brett Eldredge’s ‘Drunk on Your Love.’ 

None of the judges turned around. Ariana told him he had a special tone, but that she thought he had an issue with control. John told him he was a little rough around the edges.

Sophia Bromberg, 16, from San Rafael, CA, went next. She said she grew up in a a very musical family. 

She said she was a senior in high school and that she struggled a lot with believing in herself. She said she had an eating disorder and was very grateful her parents were there to support her. 

She sang Conan Gray’s ‘Heather’ and Kelly, John and Ariana all turned around almost at the same time. Ariana told her that her voice was so controlled and that she had a unique voice. John told her that she had all things that she could do with her voice. Kelly told her that her singing was like painting.

She ended up picking Ariana. The two of them hugged. Ariana was so excited about how her team was building up.

‘That was shocking party of one,’ Kelly said.

Wyatt Michael, 24, from Fredericksburg, VA, sang a jazz song. He said he started off singing with his brother in a rock band, but then his mother introduced him to Frank Sinatra. 

Ariana and Kelly both turned around. Ariana told him that he had a time capsule in his voice that brought her back to a period in time. Kelly told him that she loved his voice and that no one else on the show sounded like him. Kelly then talked about them doing a duet in the final.

‘My girlfriend is a huge fan of Ariana but I have to go with my gut and I pick Kelly,’ Wyatt said.

Alexandra Stojack, 20, from Cincinnati, Ohio, took the stage. 

She said she got a lot of headaches growing up and slurred speech until finally they figured out that she needed brain surgery to release tension in her skull. After the surgery, she said she felt as if a rock had been taken out of her head. 

She sang ‘The Way I Am.’ None of the coaches turned around. Kelly and Ariana said that they both thought nerves got the best of her.

Blake said he was worried and that he thought she needed something more stable. He told her that he had been here ‘forever’ and would be honored to be her coach. She decided to pick John to be her coach.

‘I’m feeling good,’ said John.

Auditions for The Voice will continue Tuesday night on NBC.
