The Voice winner Jason ‘Sundance’ Head has broken his silence after he accidentally shot himself Friday, admitting he felt his life was in danger after absorbing a bullet to the stomach.
‘I was sure that I was gonna die,’ Head, 46, said in a clip uploaded Sunday to Facebook, a day after his wife Misty Head provided an update to fans on his condition.
The singer-songwriter, who won the 11th season of the NBC musical competition in 2016, described the incident – which occurred while he was handling a firearm on a hunting trip at his East Texas ranch – as ‘one of the craziest things that’s ever happened to’ him.
Head was leaning into his vehicle to grab his .22 caliber pistol when it fell out of its holster and onto the exterior of the vehicle and fired off a shot that hit Head in the stomach, his agent Trey Newman told the AP in an email.
Head said in the Facebook clip – titled Statement – Part 1 – that he was providing an update to his fans about his health, after he was was airlifted to UT Tyler Hospital, located about 100 miles east of Dallas.

‘I really wanted to come on here and tell you guys that I am alive – I’m in a lot of pain,’ Head said. ‘I was shot accidentally in the stomach. I was alone.
‘I have a lot of life left, and that’s what I was telling these ladies and gentlemen that [were] trying to keep me alive during the whole process, man.’
Head said he was ‘so thankful for the first responders,’ who ‘did a wonderful job’ in helping him recover from the traumatic incident.
Head was released from UT Tyler Hospital Friday after doctors determined that no surgery was needed, as no vital organs were hit.
Head said that the actions of a Good Samaritan who helped him were pivotal.
‘I was bleeding out right there,’ he said. ‘Didn’t have anyone to help me, and you know, I had about a dozen cars go by and see me and make eye contact, and they didn’t stop.
‘I’m telling you what, buddy, I was at the end of the road.’
Head said he was ‘really, really fortunate and thankful for the couple of gentlemen that did turn around,’ adding, ‘I want to tell you honestly that I love you and I’m so thankful that you were in my life at that moment – and it wasn’t a chance meeting between us.’

‘So, I really love you, really thank you, and look forward to sharing the rest of the story with you.’
Before his win on The Voice, Head competed on American Idol on Fox in 2007, making it to the top 16 before being eliminated.
Head, who has upcoming performances scheduled in Texas and Illinois, is from the community of Porter, located north of Houston.
