- Actresses Ajiona Alexus, Tessa Thompson, and Sarah Hyland all landed a spot on this year’s worst-dressed list
- The 69th Primetime Emmy Awards is taking place in Los Angeles, California, on Sunday evening
- Many of the looks on the red carpet featured garish bright colors, and unflattering designs
Every star wants to make a stand-out statement on the red carpet, particularly when it comes to major award ceremonies like the Oscars, the Golden Globes – and the Emmy’s.
But for some celebrities, that determination to make their sartorial mark means they occasionally miss the mark entirely, earning themselves a fashion-focused shout-out not for their superior sense of style, but for their under-whelming attempts to rule the red carpet.
This year’s Primetime Emmy Awards saw plenty of awkward fashion faux pas, with several A-listers landing themselves a spot on a worst-dressed list that is filled with garish neon gowns, unsightly rainbow fabrics, and plenty of ill-fitting, unflattering fashions.
Awkward: 13 Reasons Why star Ajiona Alexus missed the mark with this unique white jumpsuit, which looked incredibly dated, and failed to flatter her figure
A colorful catastrophe: Thor: Ragnarok actress Tessa Thompson’s dress closely mirrored the crazy colors in an oil slick
Overload: While the cut of the design perfectly flattered 33-year-old Tessa’s figure, the over-the-top metallic rainbow material was far too overwhelming
Unfortunate: Beautiful brunette Sarah Hyland’s netted lace dress featured a cut out at the stomach through which the top of her black underwear could be seen peeking out
Shiny shocker: TV chef Sandra Lee looked more like she was preparing to walk down the aisle than the red carpet in this shimmering white number
Oh dear: The shiny fabric gave the dress a rather cheap look
That’s a lot of leg! Ariel Winter’s dress left little to the imagination thanks to the crotch-high slits on either side
Garish green: Silicon Valley star Amanda Crew (left) and comedian Ashley Nicole Black (right) both wore dresses with a neon green embellishment that clashed terribly with the red carpet
Familiar: Meanwhile Ryan Michelle Bathe, the wife of This Is Us star Sterling K. Brown, also plumped for the bold color in this less-than-glamorous lace dress
Oh dear: The poofy layers on the dress didn’t do anything to flatter Ryan’s figure, while the brown lining of the gown clashed awkwardly with the bright green color
Neon brights: Carrie Coon, who stars in Fargo, wore a garish neon pink dress that featured plastic flower embellishments on the front
Wow! This Is Us actor Chris Sullivan and his producer wife Rachel Reichard (left) wore over-the-top ensembles, while musician Rickey Minor and wife Karen clashed with one another in their patterned outfits
