Theresa May calls for a woman to play James Bond in future

Theresa May declared that James Bond should be a woman in future as she hailed ‘girl power’.

The Prime Minister revealed she would be watching Doctor Who on Christmas Day, which will have a female playing the doctor for the first time.

Jodie Whittaker, a Yorkshire actress who starred in the ITV drama Broadchurch, got the job as the Time Lord earlier in the year.

Speaking on the way to visit troops in RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, she said: ‘I do like watching Doctor Who at Christmas and I think this is a great move forward for girl power that there is going to be female Doctor Who.

‘One day there should be a female James Bond.’

Actor James Norton has been recently named as the most likely successor to replace Daniel Craig as the next 007 agent.

The 32-year-old star of new BBC drama McMafia has danced with the 007 rumours for a couple of years now, but earlier this month he became the favourite according to bookmakers William Hill.

But the PM, 61, thinks it should one day be a female.

Asked about the next James Bond, Mrs May smiled: ‘Well I don’t know who is being… did I read the other day that James Norton was being talked about as a possible James Bond…?’

She added: ‘Sorry there are rumours… I think James Norton did the interview in which he said he would quite like to.’

Asked if she would back Mr Norton as the next James Bond, she laughed and responded: ‘I don’t know who the other candidates might be, so….’

Mrs May is a trailblazer for high-profile prominent women.

She set up Women2Win in 2005 with Baroness Jenkin.

The group leads a campaign to elect more Conservative women to Parliament.
