The most sought-after suburbs from each Australian capital city have been revealed.
Domain determined the most in-demand places to live for 2023 based on the highest average views per home listing; the hottest spots were then named in the End of Year Report.
It was all about affluence in Sydney and Adelaide where ritzy suburbs Clovelly and Unley were named the most desirable areas respectively.
Bedfordale in Perth’s hills was the most popular in Western Australia while Hobart’s quaint inner-city suburb of Battery Point was the top spot in Tasmania.
TV renovation show The Block had a significant influence on where home buyers looked in Victoria with Hampton East, the location of the show’s most recent season, coming out on top in Melbourne.
Darwin’s man-made marina development of Cullen Bay was popular in the Northern Territory and one of Canberra’s oldest suburbs Forrest topped the ACT’s list.

It has been a turbulent year for Australia’s housing market with inflation and interest rates leaving the dream of owning a property out of reach for many Aussies.
Sydney has the highest median house price in the country at $1,583,521 while the median of all the nation’s capital cities is $1,084,855.
Darwin has the lowest median sale price of $649,538 well below the second-lowest, Hobart at $712,062.
SYDNEY – CLOVELLY
Sitting by the beach in Sydney south-east, just 8km from the city centre, is the highly sought-after suburb of Clovelly.
Known for its pristine beaches and relaxed atmosphere, Clovelly is a close-knit community away from the hoards of tourists flocking the nearby Bondi Beach.
44 properties were sold between December 2022 and November 2023 with the average house price at a whopping $4.455million.
Property prices have grown 3.6 per cent in the past year and jumped by $1.32million in the past five years.
In 2022, the Inner West suburb of Birchgrove topped Sydney’s list but hasn’t even made an appearance on 2023’s top five most in-demand areas.
Following Clovelly, Sydney’s most popular suburbs were Bronte, Castlecrag, McMahons Point and Balmain.

The glitzy spotlight put Hampton East on the radar of many home buyers with searches and listing view skyrocketing on Domain.
Located 14km south-east of the Victorian capital’s CBD, the normally-peaceful suburb is said to be the perfect place to bring up a family with schools, parks and playgrounds in abundance.
The median house price is currently at $1.437million with little growth over the past five years. The 2018 median price was just over $1.2million.
Other popular suburbs in Melbourne in 2023 include Middle Park, Albert Park, Carlton North and Toorak.

BRISBANE – BROOKFIELD
On the outskirts of Brisbane is the rural residential suburb of Brookfield that dates back to the Queensland’s capital’s beginnings in the 1860s.
It lies 13km west of the city centre and is home to a number of impressive mansions on huge lots with breathtaking views.
18 properties have been sold over the past 12 months and the current median house price sits at a neat $1.7millon compared to $1.1million five years ago.
Those searching for a home in the area were looking for listing with a shed, view, pool, study and granny flat according to Domain data – and with Brookfield’s ample space, many houses would tick those boxes.
After Brookfield, Pullenvale, Hawthorne, New Farm, and Holland Park West were the most clicked-on Brisbane suburbs among Aussie home buyers.

ADELAIDE – UNLEY
With stunning tree-lined streets filled with charming heritage homes, Adelaide’s Unley was the place many South Australian property hunters were dreaming of.
It is a stone’s throw away from the city centre and lines the southern outskirt of the CBD with trendy high-streets where boutique stores, swanky eateries and cute cafes thrive.
The median house price has climbed $618,750 since 2018 and currently sits at $1.57million.
Unley is a slightly cheaper alternative to its neighbour Unley Park, which is one of the city’s most expensive suburbs, with house prices rising 16.4 per cent in the last year and median cost of $2.4million.
The next four sought-after Adelaide suburbs were Goodwood, Bridgewater, Striling, which topped the 2022 list, as well as North Adelaide.

CANBERRA – FORREST
With a median house price of $3.51million sitting well above Canberra’s overall $1.05million is the covetable suburb of Forrest.
Forrest is in Canberra’s inner-south and is one of the oldest and most prestigious suburbs in the nation’s capital.
Those searching for homes in Forrest were after a new house with a view, study, courtyard, and pool.
In 2023 Forrest knocked the area of Deakin off the top spot to number five, a suburb famed for housing the prime minister’s official residence, The Lodge, the Royal Australian Mint and Deakin University.
Canberra suburbs also hot on Domain’s search bar were O’Connor, Yarralumla, and Narrabunda.

PERTH – BEDFORDALE
Perth home buyers continued their trend of steering away from the coastal suburbs to looking for a tree change in the leafy eastern hills.
The semi-rural suburb of Bedfordale in Perth’s south-east is the doorway to many popular hiking and cycling spots and has a mix of modest suburban homes and huge mansions on sprawling estates.
Bedfordale has a median sale price of $995,000 which is up 8.2 per cent in the last 12 months – trumping Perth’s media house price of $724,033.
In 2022, another hills suburb Gidgegannup topped the most in-demand list for Perth and came in at number two this year.
All of Perth’s 2023 top five were located in the eastern hills with Gooseberry Hill, Darlington and Roleystone earning the third, fourth and fifth place respectively.

Strolling through Battery Point is like taking a walk back in time as the streets are filled with heritage homes that have been beautifully preserved.
It dates back as far as 1818 and its surrounding snow-dusted mountains provide the most jaw-dropping backdrop character-filled streets and roads.
Battery Point was the only suburb in Australia to top the most in-demand list in both 2022 and 2023.
It is just a 10-minute walk from the city centre and has a median house price of 2.3million – more than triple Hobart’s median selling price.
Battery Point has experienced a whopping 60 per cent growth in house prices in the last 12 months with 17 properties sold.
Buyers were staying near the city centre in 2023 as the Tassie capital’s remaining top five most-clicked on suburbs were Hobart, West Hobart, Sandy Bay and North Hobart.

There is no specific data relating to Cullen Bay’s median house price however the Larrakeyah figure sits at $1.41million which is up by 61.7 per cent in the past year.
Darwin’s other most popular suburbs were Howards Springs, Fannie Bay, Rapid Creek and Alawa.
