  • Barca were knocked out early from the Champions League and Copa Del Rey

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois took a swipe at Barcelona for their early exit from both the Champions League and Copa Del Rey this season.

The Belgian noted that some teams ‘only play from Saturday to Saturday’ when asked about the gap between Real Madrid and Barcelona in the LaLiga standings.

Barca are 11 points clear at the top of the LaLiga table with just nine games to go until the end of the domestic season.

However, the Catalans were knocked out from the Champions League in the group stage after failing to get out of Group C, which included Viktoria Plzen as well as quarter-finalists Bayern Munich and Inter Milan.

Xavi’s side were then knocked out of the Copa Del Rey by Real Madrid over two games in the semi-final, which ended 4-1 on aggregate despite Barca holding a 1-0 advantage heading into the second leg.

Speaking after Real’s 2-0 win over Cadiz in the league on Saturday evening, Courtois slammed Barca for their premature exits from the Spanish and European cups.

‘There is a long distance in points with Barcelona,’ he said. ‘But we still have the Copa del Rey final against Osasuna and we play during the week. Others only play from Saturday to Saturday.

Real Madrid closed the gap on Barcelona after the Blaugrana were held to a 0-0 draw with Getafe, whilst Los Blancos picked up a win on the road against Cadiz.

Speaking about the match, Courtois added: ‘We played a good game. Until the first goal we made many chances, but David Gil played a good game.

‘They had the chance to hold out for a draw, but we controlled the game. We were able to score more goals, but I hope we saved them for Tuesday.’

Real Madrid face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday evening.

The reigning Champions hold a 2-0 advantage heading into the return fixture, having schooled Frank Lampard’s side at the Santiago Bernabeu last Wednesday.
