At Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport, seven departures were disrupted and a flight to Belfast was cancelled.
Passengers described having to sit in planes for hours on the runway as they waited for the flights to take off.
A spokesman for Manchester Airport told MailOnline: ‘We had had disruption since 5.55am today, but it is starting to lift now and we are opening our second runway.
‘There have been quite a few flights delayed, with an average delay of around 20 minutes. A few Flybe and Loganair flights were cancelled this morning.’
Passengers took to Twitter to complain about the disruption.
Nigel Campbell wrote: ‘Love getting up at 6am for an 8:45am flight and then still be sitting on the runway at 10:15am #Fog.’
Martin Paton said: ‘It’s ok I spent two hours sat on a plane waiting to take off in thick fog. That said the flight took less time than King St to Central does.’
And Jason Carty posted: ‘My flight to Liverpool has landed an hour late. And it’s landed in the East Midlands. Fog, apparently. RyanAir (sic), you’ve done it again!’
