  • Public Health England said thirty children suffered ‘diarrhoea and vomiting’
  • Mullion Holiday Park spokesperson has confirmed the illness originated off-site

Thirty children and eight adults have been taken ill after a sickness bug swept through a holiday park in Cornwall.

Paramedics were called to the Mullion Holiday Park in Cornwall at 10.30am on Thursday to reports of ‘diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea and abdominal cramps’.

A mother described the scenes as ‘horrific’, saying children were ‘dropping like flies’ at the caravan park, which is nestled on the Lizard Peninsula.

She added that refunds were being refused and said she knew of at least two families with children who had been taken to hospital due to the bug.

The unidentified mother said her family felt trapped on the site as they don’t want to return home and risk spreading the virus to other family members.

Another father said his family-of-five had been ‘up all night vomiting, diarrheoa and getting dehydrated’, while his daughter was taken to hospital for observation, ITV News reported.

Public Health England said most people affected ‘appear to have recovered quickly’.

A spokesman from the holiday park confirmed work is now being undertaken to limit the spread of the virus, which is believed to have originated off-site.

‘We are carrying out an investigation after a group of guests at our park have become ill’, a statement said.

‘We immediately contacted Public Health England and the EHO and are co-operating with them fully to look after our guests and limit the spread of any virus.

‘We have strict food hygiene standards and we are working with the authorities to identify the source.

‘From our initial conversations with Public Health England the most likely explanation is that the illness was brought onto the park, rather than originating on-site.’

A spokesperson for South Western Ambulance Service added: ‘We were called at around 10.25am about an incident in a caravan at a holiday park near Helston.

‘We sent a senior paramedic and an ambulance crew to attend the incident.

‘As the incident didn’t take place in a public area we cannot provide any further details.’
