This is the BEST meat pie in Australia: Winning pastries are crowned at national awards

The best meat pie in Australia for 2021 has been crowned at The Official Great Aussie Pie Competition.

Pinjarra Bakery in Pinjarra, Western Australia, an hour south of Perth, was named the winner of the ‘plain pie’ category.

The bakery had candidates in several other categories, including best plain mince pie and best gourmet red meat pie, but it was its classic plain meat pie that reigned supreme.

The runner-up was Jack’s Bakery, also in Western Australia, with its chunky pie.  

The national competition saw hundreds of contestants enter from across the country and the pies were judged based on pastry thickness, texture and taste

Of the 18 different categories, four were won by bakeries in Western Australia, five in Victoria, two in South Australia and seven in Queensland.

Gourmet pies, poultry pies, vegetarian pies and sausage rolls were also judged. 

Paradise Bakehouse in Queensland won gold in the best ‘gourmet pie’, best ‘gourmet poultry pie’ and best ‘gourmet poultry pie’ categories.

The Little Red Grape Bakery in South Australia won both the ‘gourmet sausage roll’ and ‘apprentice gourmet poultry’ categories.

Last year Rolling Pin Pies & Cakes in Ocean Grove, 25 minutes south east of Geelong in Victoria, won the ‘best pie’ category

The Official Great Aussie Pie Competition was founded in 1989 and recognises the high-quality standards of pies across Australia.

In recent years the competition has included vegetarian and non-red meat pie options.
