This Is Us premiere reveals how Jack Pearson dies

Fans have known he died since episode five of season one.

And This Is Us may have finally revealed how Jack Pearson met his demise in Tuesday night’s season two opener.

Although it is never confirmed, A Father’s Advice appeared to suggest Kate, Kevin and Randall’s dad died in a house fire.

The episode closed with Rebecca (Mandy Moore) driving with her husband’s (Milo Ventimiglia) belongings beside her.

But when she reaches the house, it is revealed to been destroyed in a fire.

Viewers of the smash hit drama – which tells the story of a single family in three different timelines – have known since last year the patriarch died, but had no idea how.

The episode also sees the teenage Kate and Randall crying, with Kate saying: ‘We have to find Kev. He needs to hear it from me.’

The premiere also revealed how Jack was battling with alcoholism in the months before his death.

The episode opened where the last season left off, with Jack and Rebecca fighting. 

‘I have been drunk for weeks, and I thought I had it under control, like the first time, but I have a problem, Rebecca,’ he told her. ‘And I’ve hidden it from you for a very long time. And I’ve hidden it from my kids, and I need to get a handle on it before I can walk back into that house. 

‘I’m sorry, baby. I am very embarrassed, and I am very sorry. I need to fix this on my own.’

But she refuses to let him face it on his own, telling him: ‘Get in the car, Jack. You are my husband, and I am your wife, and if you have a problem, we will fix it together.’

She adds: ‘A few months from now, everything will be back to normal.’

At a screening on Monday night, Moore said the whole story behind his death had yet to be revealed.

‘We don’t know the full story, we’ll say that, that’s not the full story, that’s just a piece of the puzzle,’ she said.
