This tiny shack down a retro arcade is drawing in flocks of foodies keen to try ‘the best sandwich in Australia’

A little-known eatery is drawing in foodies in droves for their drool-worthy sandwiches some have said are the best in the country.

Down an unassuming arcade in the Sydney suburb of Crows Nest is a colourful stand-alone stall named On A Roll.

The word is spreading about the tiny café’s mouth-watering sandwiches and oozing cheesy toasties – so much so that the owners are hiring more staff, extending opening hours and expanding their menu.

Menu favourites include the Cubano sandwich with Mexican-style pork, pickles and mustard, as well as the ‘fancy’ ham and cheese sandwich made gourmet with the addition of provolone and bocconcini cheese and chives.

Vegetarians can enjoy the mushroom provolone toastie with black garlic on white sourdough bread, and the ‘Mushroom Feel Good Sandwich’ filled with onion ricotta, avocado, bocconcini and basil.

There is also the Philly cheesesteak, which one diner said was better than any they had tasted in the USA.

But it’s the brisket and Reuben sandwiches that keep customers coming back time and time again.

The $19.50 brisket sandwich comes with house-smoked brisket, aged cheddar and slaw, while the $20 Reuben has pastrami, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing.

One visitor said On A Roll’s brisket sandwich is ‘the best thing you will ever taste’, while another said the hidden eatery was ‘worth the hype’.

‘Bold claim time. I think I’ve discovered THE best Reuben sandwich in Sydney! If you haven’t tried one from here yet I suggest you do ASAP,’ one woman raved.

‘Wish I found out about it sooner, walked past it so many times not knowing how good the sandwiches were here,’ another said.

‘I’ve pretty much tried all the sandwiches (Reuben, brisket, Philly cheesesteak, Cubano) all of them are great not a bad one, it’s becoming a weekly thing for me now,’ someone added.

Sydney cafes have been battling it out for the title of best sandwich in the city, with food lovers catching on to the tasty trend.

Salumerie founder Donato Salomone opened the deli to give Sydneysiders a taste of his home town of Naples with sandwiches inspired by his mother’s cooking.

The homemade focaccia bread is crispy on the outside and pillowy soft on the inside and the perfect vessel for the various combinations of fillings.

Meanwhile, others have been flocking to Arno Deli in the heart of Newcastle which specialises in giving diners a taste of the Mediterranean with an extensive range of Italian cold meats, cheeses, desserts and wine.

Arno is famous in Newcastle for its rotating menu of 26 drool-worthy paninis with soft schiacciata bread.

Fan favourites include the number five with mortadella, pistachio cream, stracciatella and pistachio and the number seven with prosciutto, finocchiona, provolone, mustard and mayonnaise.
