Thousands of drivers were caught up in Christmas Day motorway misery after a crash shut the M1 on Monday.

The collision happened at junction 8 for Hemel Hempstead causing huge tailbacks on the roads.

It has now been reopened but delays continue. 

Drivers described chaos on the roads with reports of ‘debris’ but were quick to praise the emergency services for their response.

According to reports, traffic is being diverted up and over via the exit and entry slip roads. 

It is not known how many vehicles were involved or what caused the crash. Details of any casualties have not yet been confirmed.

Motorist Chris Bryson tweeted: ‘M1 J8 Northbound crash. Emergency services out here looking after us all on Christmas Day. 

‘Lot of debris and blues. Hope nobody is hurt.’

Kofi Ofori-Quaah, added: ‘Much respect to emergency services on Christmas Day, hope whoever is in there comes out ok #EmergencyServices #M1 #Junction 8.’

 

Lauren Phillips added: ‘Can’t believe the accident I’ve just seen on the M1 and the hundreds delayed from their Christmases from it… Christmas miracle needed today.’
