Furious commuters have slammed Sydney Trains after track work overnight caused major delays – with some waiting on platforms for almost two hours.

Services on the T1, T2, North Link and West Link were either severely delayed or cancelled as engineers upgraded a 40-year-old manual signal box into a computerised system.

One commuter complained of having to wait 87 minutes for a train while another said his train driver told him to catch a bus or simply walk over the Harbour Bridge.

Sydney Trains apologised for the delays and said there were extra staff members at stations to help people with enquiries.

‘We’d like to apologise to customers that were impacted as a result of extended trackwork from last night’s signalling switch over,’ said a spokesman said.

‘We are providing a regular service on the T1 North Shore, Northern and Western Line to ensure customers are able to reach their destination. Buses are also supplementing services between Central and Strathfield stations.’
