Thousands are wowed after mum uses a simple $3 supermarket buy to transform her mouldy taps

The simple $3 supermarket buy that will transform your mouldy tarnished taps with zero scrubbing

  • An Australian mum shared how she used tomato ketchup to banish mould
  • The acid and vinegar in the ketchup is the reason why it’s easy to break down dirt

A mum has wowed thousands after sharing how she transformed the mouldy taps in her new home using tomato sauce.

The Australian woman, called Nicole, said she recently moved into a house ‘that didn’t have the level of love’ she would have liked it to have.

Taking matters into her own hands, the homeowner simply applied some tomato sauce to the taps, allowed it to soak in and then buffed it clear with a microfibre cloth to reveal shiny taps that look brand new.

Nicole wrote on Facebook: ‘Shut the front door team.

‘I’d been ignoring these taps as they will be removed in a reno, but thought if the tomato sauce trick was going to work this would be it, so I tried it! And it worked!’

She added: ‘Can I quietly add that I put the sauce on, made myself a margarita, watched a movie (self care day), went to the bathroom and scared the sh*t out of myself and then realised it was tomato sauce’.

The reason why the trick works is because vinegar is the active ingredient in tomato sauce, and vinegar is acidic and good at cutting through grime

One commenter explained that the reason why tomato sauce is better than vinegar is because the ‘thicker consistency of the sauce helps it stay in contact longer’ with the mould.

Others said it’s the acid in both the tomatoes and the vinegar that is what helps break down the dirt and build-up around the taps.

‘So trying this! Thank you so much for sharing,’ one commenter wrote.

Another added: ‘Gold! Now that’s the way to clean!’ while a third said ‘that’s worrying, imagine what it’s doing to our stomachs’.

This isn’t the first time someone has used tomato ketchup to transform a space.

Previously, mums have left ketchup to sit on rust stains and soap scum for hours at a time to work magic on both their sinks and plug holes.

‘Thanks to this group I learnt the tomato sauce around the tap trick. OMG it’s amazing. Mine was terrible. Left it overnight,’ one mum said.

She applied the condiment around the base of her bathroom sink tap, left it sit overnight then scrubbed in the morning wiping away the tough brown marks.

Another member squirted ketchup all over the sink plug hole which was stained with soap scum.

‘I used ketchup and left on for 11 hours, scrubbed and then just rinsed off,’ she captioned her dramatic before-and-after pictures of her good-as-new sink.
