Thousands in Sydney without power after flash of light

  • Twitter users reported seeing exploding light in the direction of Darling Harbour
  • Others were quick to say there had been a mass blackout in their region
  • Reports are flooding in about a substation fire at Earlwood causing the disaster
  • According to Seven News more than 41,000 homes have been affected 
  • Power will supposedly not be restored until at least 1am at this stage 

More than 41,000 homes are without power after reports of a fire at a substation in Western Sydney.

Twitter users began posting frenzied questions about a ‘massive flash of light’ in the direction of Darling Harbour and were trying to figure out if ‘the power blew.’

One user wrote: ‘No power in Inner West Sydney. Exploded substation? Reports of explosion.’

Journalist Laura Banks confirmed that an electricity substation was indeed on fire at Earlwood, causing mass blackouts between Marrickville and Strathfield.

The power is not going to be restored until 1am, Ms Banks confirmed. 

Campsie, Ashfield, Belmore, Canterbury, Kingsgrove, Croydon, Dulwich Hill and Lakemba are all affected according to Ausgrid.
