Three people die and a woman fights for life after a car slams into a tree and tears in half

  • One of the cars involved was on the run from police in an unregistered vehicle 
  • Police say it’s too early to tell if drugs or alcohol were involved

  • The incident occurred just before 8pm in Alice Springs 

Three people are dead and a woman is fighting for life after a police chase ended in a horrific crash on Christmas Day.  

Police say it’s too early to tell if drugs or alcohol were involved the incident, which unfolded in the Alice Springs suburb of Sadadeen at 8pm on December 25. 

Officers attempted to pull the unregistered vehicle over before the driver fled at speed, police said.

The car was involved in a minor collision before it slammed into a tree on Spearwood road – where it tore completely in half.  

Police stressed they were not pursuing the car in the lead up to the crash.

Northern Territory Police Assistant Commissioner of Regional Operations and Road Policing, Narelle Beer said a critical incident investigation into the incident has been launched. 

‘At this stage, we’re looking at it from a death in custody point of view to ensure we start at that level and we can come back,’ she said. 

‘It’s really important we do a thorough independent investigation and we apply all the resources that we can and then we can reassess.’

The driver and two passengers died, and two others were taken to hospital.

Of those two one remains in the intensive care unit in a stable condition.   

The 2019 Northern Territory Road Toll now stands at 35.
