A three-year-old boy has died after being being struck by a car outside a church at around 7pm on Saturday night.

Thang Khat Sun was killed when he was hit in the carpark of the New Hope Baptist Church in the Melbourne suburb of Blackburn North, 17km east of the CBD.

He and his family had just arrived for the Khuado Pawi cultural festival held by people from the Zomi ethnic group, who are originally from mountain towns in north-western Myanmar.

The emergency services were immediately called, but paramedics were unable to save the little boy’s life.

The Secretary of the Zomi Community in Melbourne, Thang Zuisang, told the Herald Sun said it was the worst tragedy their community had experienced in their adopted home.

He said the festival site at the church was very busy.

‘Nobody really knows what happened, it was really sudden, everyone is in shock, it’s really sad. The worst tragedy we have in the community here.

‘To be honest, even though we kept (the festival going), nobody was in a good mood to celebrate that festival that day.’
