A thrifty mum has shared her McDonald’s ‘fakeaway’ idea that fed her family of four for just $25. 

The Bendigo budgeter made four McChicken meal dupes at home using chicken strips coated in blended corn thin crumbs instead of spending more than $50 for the real deal. 

She showed off her ‘Maccas alternative’ in the popular Mums Who Budget Facebook group impressing hundreds of members who were keen to try the recipe for themselves.

‘If you’re looking for a Maccas alternative then this is for you!’ she wrote in the post.

‘The cost of four medium McChicken meals is approximately $50 give or take. This is how I make them at home!!’

The mum said she sprinkled smoked paprika onto some chicken breasts then used an egg white wash to coat them. 

She dips the chicken into a crumb of blended corn thins, paprika and salt then cooks them in an air fryer at 195 degrees for 18-20 minutes.

‘I can make four ‘McChicken meals’ for just over $25,’ she said. 

‘It would be less cost over time as you only have to buy the spices and corn thins once.’

She also used mayonnaise and sriracha mayo she already had at home.  

The home cook also shared everything she bought to make the tasty budget meal that all up cost $25.95. 

Her Woolworths online order included cheese slices, seasonings, chicken breasts, lettuce, brioche burger buns, fries, and a bottle of coke. 

Mums in the comments were impressed with the budget ‘fakeaway’.

‘I’ve never even considered using corn thins as a crumb. Will definitely be trying this!’ one group member said. 

‘Well done. The Aldi southern style chicken and brioche buns are delicious too!’ another suggested. 

‘Looks simple to make gluten free too. Thanks for the idea,’ a third added. 

‘Much healthier and better bang for your buck,’ a fourth pointed out. 

One woman shared her own ‘lazy chicken burger option’ using ‘schnitzels that were $1.25 each, buns, cheese, lettuce, tomato, aioli’.

‘Dinner for four – about $12,’ she added.
