Thug who wrapped cord around a police officer’s neck avoids jail

A Queensland man has avoided jail after trying to wrap the cord of a police radio around an officer’s neck during a drunken attack.

Mark Matthew Doyle, 23, appeared in Bundaberg Magistrates Court on Thursday, where police prosecutor Senior Constable Andrew Blunt told the court police saw Doyle aggressively yelling and throwing clothes on the road outside a house on Targo St on January 9 this year.

Police stopped to ask if he was okay, when Doyle threw himself face-down on the ground and was arrested after abusing the officers.

Doyle was taken to the police station where he grabbed the throat of one of the officers before trying to wrap the cord of his police radio around his neck, the News Mail reported.

Doyle’s aggressive behaviour continued when he attempted to fight the officers as he was being pushed back into the cell, the court heard.

His lawyer Gavin James, said Doyle was ‘highly intoxicated’ and had little memory of the incident.

Mr James told the court Doyle was in rehab working on his ‘long-term alcohol issues’ but was unable to contain himself when his girlfriend broke up with him.

The court heard Doyle had a ‘few wines and let his emotions get the best of him.’
