Thugs slash an IGA worker with meat cleaver in Melbourne

A gang of armed thugs is at large after robbing a Melbourne supermarket and injuring a female employee on Sunday night.

Three men burst into the Wyndham Vale IGA at around 9.30pm and started making demands while threatening two workers with a meat cleaver, kitchen knife and large hammer.

One female employee sustained vicious cuts and gashes to her hands and arms, while another had a long knife blade held against her throat as the men robbed them store of cash and cigarettes.

The injured employee, aged 50, was treated at the scene by paramedics and 7NEWS now understands that she is in a stable condition.

Victoria Police rushed to the scene, but the thieves – who were wearing hooded jumpers and gloves – had already fled the area.

Authorities have seized high quality CCTV footage as part of their ongoing investigation into the hold-up.
