A Tijuana judge was arrested after he smuggled 38 pounds of cocaine crossing the border.

Apparently the drugs were found hidden in Eduardo Francisco Sais Peinado’s Jeep Liberty, a San Diego federal court reported.

He was arrested February 10 at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, according to the San Diego Union Tribune.

Sais was fired from his judicial post the same day as his arrest for an unrelated work incident. The Tijuana city official declined to elaborate further.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer approached Sais, who was alone in his Jeep when crossing about 6:20 pm, as he waited in the pre-primary lanes.

According to the complaint Sais presented his border crossing card and said he was headed to Chula Vista.

He claimed he had nothing to declare and that the only people who use the Jeep are him and his girlfriend.

The officers used a device that tests the density of vehicle parts and got a high reading on the door panels.

Officials became suspicious after a drug-sniffing dog went to the door and an X-ray found anomalies in passenger doors.

They eventually found 11 packages of cocaine hidden in the front and rear passenger doors, as well as five packages in the rear door.

Sais has agreed to remain in federal custody without bail and is pleading not guilty.
