Timo Werner admits he is ‘very proud’ to be linked with ‘best team in the world’ Liverpool

‘It makes me very proud’: Timo Werner cannot hide his delight as he addresses transfer links with ‘best team in the world’ Liverpool after scoring winner at Tottenham

RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner has admitted he is ‘proud’ to be linked with ‘the best team in the world’ Liverpool after scoring the winner against Tottenham on Wednesday evening.

The 23-year-old has been a long-time target of Liverpool’s and has been in red-hot form in front of goal this season, scoring 26 times in 32 matches in all competitions.

Werner scored the only goal of the match – a second-half penalty after Ben Davies brought down Konrad Laimer in the box – as Leipzig took the ascendancy in the Champions League last-16 tie.

Timo Werner admitted it was an honour to be continually linked with a move to Liverpool

Questioned about rumours linking him with Liverpool, Werner said: ‘I know that Liverpool is the best team at the moment in the world and when you are linked with that team it makes me very proud.

‘It’s a pleasure but I know that Liverpool play a lot of good players and I have to improve myself and I need to learn many more things to get to that level and to play there.’

Although Leipzig will undoubtedly be delighted by their victory in the first leg of their tie with Tottenham, the Germans could have easily walked away with a more significant advantage.

The Bundesliga title chasers dominated much of the proceedings with Tottenham only threatening towards the end of the second half as they desperately searched for an equaliser.

But Werner insisted afterwards that the job remains far from done with Jose Mourinho’s side coming to Leipzig for the second leg in three weeks’ time.

He added: ‘Tottenham are a good team and they showed last year that mentally they can come back in these games and we have to do the same like we did today if we want to progress.

‘We have had a good start for the first half of the last-16 clash but we will need to push on.’
