Today hosts joke about Meghan Markle’s ‘love for the streets’

Today hosts joke about Meghan Markle’s ‘love for the streets’ after she asked DJ Idris Elba to play Dr. Dre at her wedding to Prince Harry

The team at Channel Nine’s Today show displayed a surprising knowledge of rap music during a segment on Meghan Markle’s wedding playlist on Thursday morning.

After discovering Markle had requested Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s 1999 hit ‘Still D.R.E.’ to be played during her wedding reception with Prince Harry, the panellists made some awkward hip-hop references.

‘Do you reckon Megan’s still got love for the streets?’ entertainment reporter Brooke Boney asked.

‘She still keeps it real, doesn’t she?’ added co-host Ally Langdon.

Fill-in host Charles Croucher then quoted the lyrics to the song, saying: ‘She’s still hitting the corners in the low-low.’

Brooke was taken aback by his knowledge of the hip-hop classic and then burst into laughter.

Much like rapper Dr. Dre, Markle was raised in Los Angeles, California.

The single ‘Still D.R.E.’ was released in 1999 and detailed the rapper’s return to the music industry following a hiatus.

It reached No. 93 on the US Billboard charts, but was a much bigger hit in the UK, where it peaked at No. 6.

It comes after actor Idris Elba revealed that Markle requested the Dr. Dre song be played at her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018.

During an interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra the 49-year-old shared that ‘Still [D.R.E] by Dr Dre went off!’ after being personally asked by the couple to provide music for their star-studded reception.

The Luther star explained that ‘it was Megan’s choice’ to play the song, after taking to the decks for the royal occasion.

Unknown to many, the Londoner is well known within the music industry having played at Ibiza nightclubs and festivals.

The original single came out in 1999 but was remastered featuring Snoop Dogg in 2012.

In the past Elba has said that despite Harry being the one that asked Idris to DJ, it was in fact Meghan that provided him with a list of all the tracks to be played on the big day.

In a previous interview Idris has explained that the night was a lot of pressure.

He said: ‘That was an incredible experience. I was curating the music for that night, so it was a but of pressure, but it was great. A vibe.’

Another song specifically requested by Meghan was the classic by Whitney Houston, I Wanna Dance With Somebody.
