Toddler dies after arriving at Cairns childcare centre feeling unwell

A two-year-old child has died after attending a government-run childcare centre in Cairns, in far north Queensland.

The child reportedly showed signs of being unwell when they arrived at the centre and is said to have had a pre-existing condition.

The toddler was flown to Brisbane for treatment but was unable to be saved.

Queensland’s Department of Education did not state the location of the child care centre but confirmed the loss of life.

A spokesman said the department is ‘aware of the tragic death of a child that attended a child care centre in Cairns and would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family at this very sad time’.

‘As the regulatory authority of early childhood education and care services, the department places the highest priority on the health, safety and wellbeing of all children attending these services,’ the spokesman told the Cairns Post.

The death is said to be considered non-suspicious and no investigation has been announced.

In July 2022, a two-year-old boy died suddenly at childcare centre in Maryborough in Queensland’s Fraser Coast region.
