Toddler, three, rushed to hospital after falling from ‘top storey’ of block of flats – as four people are arrested on suspicion of child neglect

A toddler has been rushed to hospital with serious injuries after falling from a block of flats in Southampton.

The three-year-old boy is reported to have plunged from the top storey of the property near Hoglands Park in the city.

Hampshire Police today said officers had arrested four people on suspicion of child neglect – two women aged 26 and 45 and two men, 29 and 45.

A force spokeperson said: ‘We were called at 6.35pm on Wednesday 4 September to a report of the concern for the welfare of a three-year-old child at an address on South Front in Southampton.

‘It was reported that the boy had fallen from a window. He has been taken to hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

‘Police attended and remain at the location at the current time carrying out enquiries into the circumstances of the incident.’

Local residents said the boy had fallen from the top storey of the building.

Neighbour Iona Leach, 70, told the Southampton Daily Echo: ‘There were two police cars in the park to make space for the helicopter, four cars in the road and two ambulance vehicles.

‘I heard them all racing down but it happens a lot. I went out the front and the boy fell in the front of a woman’s door.

‘Emergency services were there for a long time. Our windows only open a little bit, then open out wide when you turn them the other way.

‘It was horrible. People couldn’t believe it was a child. I just hope he is alright.’

The Hampshire Police spokesperson said of the people arrested: ‘All four remain in police custody at the current time.

‘Anyone who was in the area at the time and saw what happened, or anyone with any information that may assist our enquiries, is asked to call 101 quoting the reference number 44240380147.’
